The Vatican has chosen another Pope: 76 year old Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, an Italian Argentine Jesuit: Pope Francesco.
The name Francis means “A Frenchman” and is in honour of the founder of the Franciscans; St Francis of Assisi. This man like his namesake seems to be an ascetic mystic, who has an appearance of spirituality and godliness to the carnal mind.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, Bergoglio’s father was an Italian immigrant and railway worker from the region around Turin, and he has four brothers and sisters. His original plan was to be a chemist, but in 1958 he instead entered the Society of Jesus and began studies for the priesthood. He spent much of his early career teaching literature, psychology and philosophy, and early on he was seen as a rising star. From 1973 to 1979 he served as the Jesuit provincial in Argentina, then in 1980 became the rector of the seminary from which he had graduated.
Bergoglio is seen an unwaveringly orthodox on matters of sexual morality, staunchly opposing abortion, same-sex marriage, and contraception. In 2010 he asserted that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children.
The new pope has already been called a humble holy man and has declared that his mission is to build a world of love and pace.
There is a high likelihood that this man could eventually be empowered as the lamb that teaches rebellion against God [the words of the dragon]; the great deceiver, the final false prophet, or he could be a short term pope.
His visit to World Catholic Youth Day in July in Brazil could be momentous and generate a massive personal following.
