John 6 is a very strong explanation of the symbols of Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, as well as alluding to the pouring out of living water at Tabernacles. Jesus also clearly says several time that he had come down from heaven and would go back there; refuting the Unitarians with the very words of Jesus Christ himself.
John 6:1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. 6:2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. 6:3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. 6:4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
Jesus uses the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the situation of the people to demonstrate that he is the Bread of Life.
6:5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? 6:6 And this he said to prove [to see what Philip would say] him: for he himself knew what he would do.
6:7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
Jesus feeds five thousand with five pita rounds and two fishes [probably Galilee fish which are very small somewhat like herring].
6:8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, 6:9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 6:10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
6:11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. 6:12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
6:13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
The people desired him to be their king because they desired the gifts of physical food from him. Their eyes and minds were on the physical advantages to be had, and not on the doctrine that he taught. Just as many brethren today attend to socialize or because they have hope of a future reward for loyalty to some organization, and care little about sound doctrine.
Yet, this physical demonstration was an allegory of Christ as the Bread of Life who will soon come and feed all nations with the unleavened bread of his doctrine; feeding the world with purity and total freedom from the bondage of sin; and teaching all peoples to internalize his very nature, and the nature of the Father with all their teachings and commandments.
The eating of unleavened bread every day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread [ulb] pictures, the elect internalizing the fullness of the very nature of God the Father and Jesus Christ. To question the eating of ulb every day of that Feast, is rebellion against the command of Christ to eat ulb for seven full days; for such a question to be an issue with church leaders of decades service, is proof of a complete lack of zeal for the word of God and the commandments of scripture.
6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. 6:15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
They take ship towards Capernaum.
6:16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, 6:17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
Jesus gives a lesson in faith.
6:18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. 6:19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs [almost four miles], they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. 6:20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. 6:21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
The people then took to boats to follow them.
6:22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;6:23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:) 6:24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
The carnal mind cannot comprehend the things of God and seeks only physical things.
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the [penalty of our sins] law of sin and death.
The law cannot give atonement for sin; it only provides a penalty for sin which is death. Only sincere repentance and the application of the sacrifice of Christ can atone for past sin.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Jesus gave himself as an atonement for our sins, paying our penalty for having broken the law in our place, that we might be forgiven and reconciled to the Father: IF we commit to “Go and sin no more,” that we might be brought back into the righteousness of law KEEPING.
Therefore we who have been reconciled to God ought not to live in fleshly worldliness and commandment breaking. We are to walk [live] as Christ walked [lived]; in the fullness of obedience to all the teachings and commandments of God.
1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
The godly will seek and DO the things of God; they will KEEP all of the will, teachings and commandments of God; with whole hearted zeal!
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
To seek the things of worldliness is to seek death; to believe and obey God is life eternal in true peace and prosperity; in total UNITY with God and all others who are likewise United With God.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Those who do what they think is right, instead of what God commands are carnally minded and cannot please God; they shall find death unless they repent.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
John 6:25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
The called of God are to labour for the things of God and not for the things of this world.
What are the things of this world that many elders and brethren are labouring for?
1) The chief seats and leadership positions.
2) The adulation of the people.
3) Authority and power over others.
4) A high lifestyle on the backs of the poor brethren.
5) An emotional “feel good” about themselves, thinking they are hot stuff and righteous; and will have a grand reward from Christ in that day.
6) Setting up themselves and their false traditions above the Word of God.
What are the things of God that we should ALL be seeking?
1) Total UNITY of mind, spirit, attitude and deeds; with the Father and Christ.
2) Always daily increasing in knowledge about God and the wisdom of his word; in continual study, a prayerful attitude and meditation on all the commandments and teachings of God.
3) To learn and DO the will of the Father at all times, without compromise, in whole hearted unwavering zeal.
4) NEVER to let anyone or anything come between us and the Word of God.
6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that [spiritual] meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
The Bread of Life is Jesus Christ, and the works of the Father; are to believe, obey and internalize the very nature of Jesus Christ.
6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
Now we get into the meaning of the feeding of the people.
6:30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
As Christ gave manna from heaven in the days of Moses; he gave the people physical bread in the days of his physical life; that he might demonstrate that he is the Bread of Life! To demonstrate that we are to symbolically eat, that is, internalize the nature of Christ; which is to be an obedient, faithful and loving serving son to God the Father; in ALL things. With unwavering uncompromising passionate love for our Father, ALWAYS
6:31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life sent by God the Father to give eternal life to all those who will repent of sin and faithfully internalize the nature of God through a diligent study and the zealous KEEPING of God’s Word.
We are NOT to stand on our traditions or on what any man says contrary to the word of God! No, Not for an instant! We are to stand on the firm foundation of the word of God!
Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
John 6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
Jesus Christ is the Passover Lamb, He is also the Unleavened Bread of Life of the Feast of Unleavened Bread; represented by the Bread of the Feast of Unleavened Bread!
Rejecting and avoiding all leaven during the Feast represents rejecting all sin; and eating the unleavened bread every day of that Feast represents the called out fully internalizing the Word fo God!
Likewise the Spirit of Jesus Christ is the Living Water of the Feast of Tabernacles which shall be poured out for all the main harvest of humanity as they are brought into the Family of God (John 7:37-39)!
Are we so spiritually ignorant and blind to these things that even elders of decades experience question if we need eat the unleavened bread every day of the Feast?
6:34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
The Bread and Water of Life, are given to those who are called and BELIEVE the Word and worship God through enthusiastic faithful obedience and whole hearted internalizing of that Word [Logos] of God!
6:36 But I said unto you, That ye [carnally minded worldly who seek after worldliness] also have seen me, and believe not.
6:37 All that the Father [calls to Christ] giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
It is the Father’s will that none who he has called should be lost; therefore correction will be administered to those who fall away in the hope that they will learn and be saved. There are also very many tares and thorns among the faithful; including a very large number among the leaders and elders who were never called or sent by God.
The only way to protect yourself is to study God’s Word diligently and DO what the scriptures say; NOT standing on the false traditions of men.
6:39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
BEWARE that these scriptures have been and will be twisted to say that belief is enough; rejecting all the other scriptures that command obedience.
6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
The people complained against Christ because he said that he came down from heaven; even as the Unitarians reject these words of Christ today.
6:41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. 6:42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? 6:43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
We Are NOT to seek to bring in members, especially not by compromising with the practical application of doctrine! It is our job to teach all men to KEEP ALL of the commandments and teachings of Jesus Christ; including his command to obey and do the Father’s will.
We are to make the announcement and warning, and to let the Father do the calling as the scriptures say; and not to try and usurp the Father’s prerogative to chose who he will call, as a part of the bride for his son!
Stop worrying about numbers, and start worrying about pleasing God!
6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Those who are of God have seen the Father, because they have seen Christ, and to see Christ is to see the Father.
6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
The bread of manna was another allegory of the true Bread of Life, Jesus Christ; who came down from heaven to give himself as our Bread of Life for our salvation.
Salvation is not just saying “I repent” and consenting to being dunked in a pool of water while continuing in sin.
Salvation also requires the internalizing of the nature of God; through diligent study, and application of the whole Word of God in our own minds and deeds! For us to OVERCOME and to “Go and sin no more,” and for us to live as Christ lived!
6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me [and does what Christ says] hath everlasting life.
Jesus Christ being ONE with God the Father was sent by the Father as the Bread of Life, for all whom the Father would call.
Carefully consider these words given just before Passover and Unleavened Bread.
6:48 I am that bread of life. 6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Jesus explains what the wine and unleavened bread of Passover and the Feast of ULB mean.
6:52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
We are to take the nature of Christ into ourselves and we are to live as he lived; We are to live by the Father’s word as Jesus did!
6:57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
6:59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
Jesus said that he will ascend back into heaven from whence he had come.
6:60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? 6:61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Many of his disciples, not understanding the spiritual and only seeking physical healing or bread, left Christ. ONLY those called by the Father remained steadfast and loyal.
Not every disciple today has been called of the Father either; the majority are tares or thorns; and a great many are Laodicean and ready to perish.
6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 6:65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
The faithful called out will remain faithful, even if they occasionally slip; for their faithfulness is genuine and of the spirit.
6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 6:69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
6:70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 6:71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.
