Israel Gaza Escalation Timeline

UPDATE 13:30 EDT 29 June:  After Netanyahu said at today’s cabinet meeting that Israel was ready to expand and escalate operations against Gaza, sirens blared across southern Israel in Netivot, Ashkelon, Sderot, and several towns in the area of Sha’ar HaNegev. An explosion was heard in the area near Gaza while two mortar shells also landed near the Gaza border fence with no injuries or damage was reported as a result of any of the attacks.

In addition six heavy Grad missiles were fired from Gaza at Netivot [the huge Israeli air base].   Iron Dome intercepted two of six missiles fired from Gaza at Netivot Sunday night. The other four exploded on vacant sites, causing no casualties or damage. The town of Netivot is 25 km [14 miles] east of the Gaza Strip. 

Late Friday night and early Saturday morning, the Israel Defense Forces arrested 18 Palestinians, 12 of them said to be Hamas members. On Saturday night and into Sunday seven Palestinians were arrested and 190 suspicious sites searched, as IDF Operation Brother’s Keeper enters its 16th day.  

President-elect Reuven Rivlin is expected to participate in a mass rally under the title “Singing Together for their Return” that is to be held on Sunday at 7:30 pm at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv.

The Israeli Air Force attacked an additional nine sites in the Gaza Strip over Saturday night in response to rocket fire at southern Israel earlier in the day, which came in response to an Israeli assassination of two Gaza men.  IAF aircraft struck two weapons manufacturing sites in northern and central Gaza, a training site in central Gaza, three rocket launchers and three other sites in southern Gaza. Direct hits were confirmed on all targets.

Israel has placed its military on combat alert for an invasion of Gaza which is being discussed in cabinet today.

BREAKING NEWS 18:00 EDT 28 June:  Armored brigades have been put on alert for deployment to the Gaza Division, while the Air Force has deployed additional Iron Dome batteries in preparation for a Gaza offensive.

BREAKING NEWS 16:00 EDT:    Two rockets hit Sderot lat Sat evening: one hit a factory causing it to catch fire in a massive blaze that destroyed a plastics factory and a paint company.  Video.  and the second hit an open area.  

Later two more rockets hit open areas in Sdot Negev.   The IDF then  struck multiple sites in Gaza, and more rockets are now being fired in reply.   The propaganda machines are now working overtime for war on Gaza. 

BREAKING NEWS 11:45 EDT:   Backed by US air power, Iraq has launched a massive offensive to destroy the Al Qaeda ISIS in and around Tikrit.

The United States has deployed Predator drones armed with Hellfire missiles in Iraq and they are now initially being used in the Bagdad vicinity.

The Iraqi military reports that government helicopter gunships have conducted airstrikes in the northern city of Tikrit. Tikrit is the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein and one of two major cities to fall in recent weeks to the al-Qaida Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and allied Sunni tribes. 

Israel Gaza Escalation

After an explosive device went off on the Gaza border fence in the Eshkol region Friday morning, IDF tanks fired into Gaza and entered the strip to search the area. Six Palestinians were reported injured, one critically. No casualties on the Israeli side.   

Also on Friday IAF aircraft struck a civilian vehicle in an assassination near the Al-Shati refugee camp in the center of the Gaza Strip. The attack occurred close to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s home.  The IAF strike came after an explosive device planted near the border fence detonated on Friday morning. 

The Palestinian news agency Ma’an identified the two dead as Muhammad al-Fasih and Usama al-Hassumi, senior members of the Nasser Saladin Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees.

The Israel Air Force also struck sites in the central and southern Gaza Strip, Friday afternoon, according to the IDF Spokesman’s Office.

The resumption of targeted assassinations by Israel is not likely to go unchallenged by militants in Gaza. 

Then at 16:15 EDT:   An IDF spokesperson confirmed that the Iron Dome anti-missile system shot down 2 rockets near the beaches of Ashekelon Friday while four more were fired from Gaza but fell in open areas. No damage or injuries were reported.  Sirens sounded in several surrounding towns and villages warning of incoming fire from Gaza. 

Then early Saturday an IDF spokesperson confirmed the IDF launched airstrikes in retaliation for Friday night’s rocket attack from Gaza. The airstrikes targeted a weapons manufacturing site in central Gaza and a weapons storage site in southern Gaza Saturday morning.
