After the battle with the kings, Abram had a vision and a promise from God.
Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
Abram then asked God for a son; as his only heir then was his nephew Lot.
15:2 And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 15:3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house [Abram’s brother’s son Lot] is mine heir.
God promised Abram a multitude of his own descendants.
15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This [Lot] shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad [outside the tent top see the stars], and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he [God] counted it [the belief; faith of Abram as] to him for righteousness.
Now the Elohim that became Jesus Christ reveals that he had caused Terah the Chaldean to leave Ur with his sons to bring Abram to Canaan; to give Canaan to Abram for his descendants.
15:7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
Abram then asked God for a sign; and Abram is commanded to make a certain special offering; and Abram obeys God.
15:8 And he said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 15:9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 15:10 And he took unto him all these, and divided [cut up] them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he [did not cut up but left whole] not. 15:11 And when the fowls [flesh eaters like crows, ravens and vultures] came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away. [Abram had not burned the sacrifice]
God caused Abram to fall into a deep sleep and gave his a prophecy by a dream.
15:12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
In the prophetic dream God tells Abram that his descendants will serve in great affliction in Egypt for 400 years and will then be brought out by the power of God.
15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not their’s [will not be given to Abram’s descendants] , and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
Note carefully: God did not say that they would be in Egypt for 400 years; God said that they would be afflicted for 400 years.
God also tells Abram that Egypt shall be judged and that Abram’s descendants will be brought out with much spoil.
15:14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
Abram is told that he will die, but that in their fourth generation [after 400 years] his descendants will return to inherit the land.
15:15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 15:16 But in the fourth generation [after 400 years] they [the family of Abram] shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
In the darkness of the night a great light passed over the altar and God made his promise that the land of Canaan would be given to the descendants of Abram. We who are of faith and submissive to live by every Word of God like Abraham was, are Abraham’s spiritual seed and have God’s promise of the in heritance of the Promised Land of eternal life: IF we are zealous to live by every Word of God.
15:17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt [El Arish] unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 15:19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 15:20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 15:21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites [of Jerusalem].
Sarai gives Abram her maid; in fact Abram was a rich man and already had many concubines (Gen 25:6); but the story of Sarai and Hagar was recorded as a special allegory for us today.
Hagar was a slave and was forced to do what she did, thereby Ishmael was the son of the slave as a type of being enslaved by sin and enslaved by the penalty of the law for sin. which penalty is death. While Sarai as a free and willing legal wife, was an allegory of the bride of Christ who is freed from enslavement and bondage to sin and death.
Galatians 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise [of God].
The Mosaic Covenant was a physical covenant with physical promises; its physical sacrifices could atone physically and maintain the physical Mosaic Covenant; but they could not free anyone from their sins to inherit any spiritual promises which is why the New Covenant of Jer 31:31 was needed.
Hagar the bond woman was an allegory of the Mosaic Covenant, while Sarai as the free woman, was an allegory of the New Covenant, in which the wages of our past sins if sincerely repented of have been paid by our Deliverer and we have been redeemed from bondage to sin and reconciled to God the Father in heaven.
Galatians 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to [physical] Jerusalem which now is [the Mosaic Covenant , and is in [spiritual bondage to sin] bondage with her children.
The promise of Sarai is an allegory of the New Covenant.
4:26 But [the heavenly Jerusalem of God the Father] Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. 4:27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
Isaac was a child of God’s promise and is an allegory of God’s promises to the spiritually called out and redeemed from sin.
4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
Paul speaks of the Mosaic Covenant persecuting the spiritual New Covenant called out in his day. This is also fulfilled by the worldly, persecuting the spiritually faithful in this society; and by the lax and lukewarm within the Ekklesia persecuting their more zealous brethren.
4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
Nevertheless the spiritually called out of the New Covenant who are faithful, are the true spiritual sons of Abraham.
4:30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. 31 So then, brethren, we [the sincerely repentant and faithful] are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
Genesis 16:1 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
16:2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 16:3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
Immediately after Hagar conceived, Hagar was filled with contempt for the barrenness of her mistress Sarai. This sin was typical of the self righteousness of those who become filled with pride in themselves and their own ways and reject any zeal to live by every Word of God. As Hagar was raised up above her mistress in her mind by her pride, so many have become proud and have exalted themselves above living by every Word of our Master to live by their own ways.
16:4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she [Hagar] saw that she had conceived, [Hagar despised Sarai] her mistress was despised in her eyes.
Sarai then complains to her husband Abram about the attitude of Hagar.
16:5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Abram then gives Sarai his consent to treat Hagar as she pleased; and the harshness of Sarai for the sin of Hagar drove Hagar to flee from Sarai.
16:6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
Then Melchesidek [Christ] appears to Hagar and bids her to return and to submit to Sarai.
16:7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 16:8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
16:9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
Hagar also receives a physical promise and blessing from God
16:10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 16:11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. 16:12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
16:13 And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? 16:14Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
16:15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16:16 And Abram was fourscore and six years  old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
Thirteen years after the birth of Ishmael, God made a covenant with Abram.
Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 17:2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
The name of Abram is changed to Abraham; and he is promised more than millions of descendants: Abraham is now promised to become the father of many NATIONS!
17:3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 17:4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 17:5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 17:6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
Then God covenants to be the God of Abraham and his descendants.
17:7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
God promises to give Abraham through Isaac the land of Canaan.
17:8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
There are two sides to any agreement and Abraham and his descendants are pledged to obey and live by every Word of God; and to circumcise all their males, as the sign of this covenant with God.
Physical circumcision is a type of the spiritual circumcision of the heart, which is a removal of the barrier between us and God through sincere repentance from all past sin and a dedicated commitment to live by every Word of God and to go and sin no more..
Jeremiah 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
God’s people are commanded by this covenant with God and again in the law given to Israel to circumcise all males on the eighth day of life, and that commandment is still binding as a physical lesson and reminding sign that we are to also become circumcised in heart.
In the millennium no uncircumcised person may enter the millennial temple [or the spiritual Family of] God.
Ezekiel 44:9 Thus saith the Lord God; No stranger, uncircumcised in heart, nor uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel.
Paul said that adults, who are already circumcised in heart, need not go through the physical operation; but our children are not converted and circumcised in heart and we are still to obey the command regarding our children in the hope that they also may become circumcised in spirit.
Genesis 17:9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 17:10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
17:11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 17:12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. 17:13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant [the sign of circumcision] shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
17:14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
Sarai means “argumentative”; and her name was changed to Sarah, meaning “exalted” or “princess” when God exalted her from barrenness to become the mother of many nations and kings.
17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
Abraham is quickly taught that nothing is impossible with God.
17:17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 17:18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac [laughter]: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
Ishmael shall be greatly blessed, but the covenant will be with Isaac.
17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
17:21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
As soon as God left off speaking Abraham obeyed God and circumcised everyone in his household; and to this day the sons of Hagar and of Judah circumcise their male children.
17:22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
17:23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 17:24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 17:25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
17:26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 17:27 And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
Genesis 18:1 And the LORD appeared unto him [Abraham] in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
Then the one who became Jesus Christ came to visit Abraham with two others, and Abraham offered his hospitality; perhaps recognizing the man as the Melchesidek he knew.
18:2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, 18:3 And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: 18:4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: 18:5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
18:6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. 18:7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.
Here I would like to point out to our Rabbinic friends that they did indeed eat milk and butter with their meat through their father Abraham; and the Eternal did likewise. Now the law was later to say that one might not simmer a kid in its own mother’s milk; which was a Canaanite fertility rite, and this law had nothing to do with the eating of milk products and meat together.
18:8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.
God then reiterates his promise to Abraham that Sarah will have a son, saying that in the fulfillment of her time [pregnancy in 9 Roman months and ten days; or ten lunar months] she would bear a son.
18:9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
The natural child bearing years of Sarah had passed; and God had allowed that to come, so that the power of God could be revealed to them and to us; that if we trust in God’s promises and keep his Word physically and spiritually: we shall inherit all of his promises in his good time.
18:10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. 18:11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
Then God knew what Sarah had thought and asked right out; why she did not believe the promises of God.
18:12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? 18:13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
18:14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
Sarah was afraid and ashamed and denied, but God also knows us and all our very thoughts.
18:15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
They then rose and took the way to Sodom, and Abraham went with them a short way to see them off.
18:16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.
Abraham diligently taught his children to live by every Word of God as we should also do, for it is the keepers of the whole Word of God who may enter the Promised Land of eternal life.
18:17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; 18:18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
God goes towards Sodom to see if it is as evil as the reports, and is prepared to destroy that city as an example for us; that all those who depart from the Word of God, if they remain unrepentant; shall likewise perish in the final lake of fire. God made an object lesson out of these people, but they will be raised up and have their chance at eternal life.
God has this to say about Jerusalem which is Judah, and spiritual Judah, the later day Ekklesia. Our sins are greater than Sodom’s sin for we are supposed to know better. Physical Judah had the Mosaic Covenant, and Spiritual Judah has the Holy Spirit of God. Sodom except for righteous Lot, did not.
The sin of Sodom was PRIDE which caused them to do as they pleased instead of living by every Word of God; and we are also filled with PRIDE which has caused us to turn from any zeal to live by every Word of God to do as we decide for ourselves.
Ezekiel 16:48 As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 16:50 And they were haughty [proud], and committed abomination [all compromise with the Word of God is an abomination] before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.
Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry [reports about] of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; 18:21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry [reports about] of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
When these “men” told Abraham of their intention to destroy Sodom and then went towards Sodom, Abraham lingered, and then drew near to them to ask about destroying the righteous with the wicked. Now surely Abraham was concerned about ANY possible righteous person in Sodom, but he must have also been very concerned about his nephew righteous Lot and Lot’s family.
18:22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
Abraham begins by asking about fifty righteous being destroyed with the wicked.
18:23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? 18:24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? 18:25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? 18:26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
Abraham then begins to bargain, so to say, and keeps changing the figures.
18:27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes: 18:28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it. 18:29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
18:30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there. 18:31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake. 18:32 And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
God agrees to save the city if only ten are found righteous and then proceeds on his way.
18:33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
Abraham was bargaining for the entire city, that if ten righteous were found there the WHOLE CITY would be spared. God did not find ten righteous men in Sodom and therefore removed the righteous out of the city before destroying the wicked.
Strangely the Ekklesia of today, would declare that removing the faithful so that the wicked could be corrected is causing division in the church! They would accuse God of dividing their corporate groups when it is they who have divided the people from GOD!
I will not lie to anyone; this work is, by calling the brethren to a zeal for God and his Word, and calling people to sincere dedication to full spiritual unity with God; IS dividing the idolaters who exalt men and corporate entities above the Word of God, from those who stand unshakable on the solid foundation of the whole word of God [which is the righteousness of God].
Those who are zealous to live by every Word of God are being separated out from lukewarm spiritually indolent Laodicea, so that the unrepentant of Laodicea [spiritually Sodom} might be corrected in tribulation.
The lesson is that; as God delivered righteous Lot out of the city and Sodom was totally destroyed by fire from heaven; those who live by faith and by every Word of God shall be separated out from those who lack any zeal to love and to live by every Word of God, before he corrects the idolatrous Ekklesia in the affliction of great tribulation!
Two angels came to Sodom to get Lot separate his family from the people of Sodom, and Lot was hospitable to them in the manner of a righteous man. Although Moses wrote that these two were angels, Lot may not have known right off that these two were angels and may have just been hospitable to strangers.
Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; 19:2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. 19:3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
Many men of Sodom then demanded sex from these two guests of Lot.
19:4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
Righteous Lot then loses his faith and does a very wicked and desperate thing by offering his two daughters to these men instead of crying out to God for deliverance. To defend his guests at the price of his daughters, tends to the idea that Lot did not know these men were angels of God.
19:6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 19:7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Then the men of Sodom replied that Lot was a stranger who come to dwell among them, and that Lot took too much on himself to judge and resist them.
19:9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow [Lot] came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
The angels pulled Lot back inside and smote these sons of wickedness with blindness.
19:10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. 19:11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
The angels seeing the reports of the wickedness of Sodom confirmed; told Lot to take his family and leave that city before it is destroyed.
19:12 And the men [angels] said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 19:13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
Lot’s married daughters and their families thought that Lot and his warnings to them to leave immediately were insane.
So it will be when God’s two messengers warn the brethren to leave this land before its destruction. Most people even in the Ekklesia, will think these two servants are crazy and will not comply, instead standing on their own false prophetic traditions.
Only those who love and live by every Word of God like Righteous Lot, and are quickly and sincerely repentant of their mistakes; the pillars who stand firmly on the whole Word of God: Will obey the word of God’s servants and leave this land before its destruction.
The men of Sodom are analogous of the our society today, and the family of Lot is analogous to the majority of the Ekklesia today; who are full of pride in their own ways and traditions and have no zeal to live by every Word of God.
19:14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked [His words seemed crazy to them.] unto his sons in law.
Then in the morning the two messengers were urgent on the righteous pillars to separate them selves from the wicked, so that they would be spared while the wicked were destroyed.
This work is an early warning message to prepare the brethren for the final warning of God’s two witnesses; which will separate out the faithful pillars, from the wicked proud, idolaters who stand on their own ways contrary to the whole Word of God.
Yes, God IS the author of division! God called you out of this world dividing you from the worldly! God separates the faithful from the wicked; so that he may afflict the wicked and spare the faithful!
19:15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
When they delayed for packing, good byes etc, the two grabbed hold of them and forcefully brought them out of the company of wickedness.
19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
The two messengers were urgent that Lot and his family run for their lives as Christ has warned us in Mat 24:15. . . This too is an analogy that we are to run to separate ourselves from all wickedness. Then Lot protested the distance and the angels showed a further mercy.
19:18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my LORD: 19:19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: 19:20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. 19:21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. 19:22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Lot and family were taken out of Sodom in the early morning, and arrived in Zoar later in the day.
19:23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
Then God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah as an example to us, that he will destroy all those who are not zealous to live by EVERY WORD of GOD.
19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Then Lot’s wife looked back and was also destroyed, she became an allegory for those who long for the pleasures of wickedness and desire to go back into the Egypt of the god-king of this world. This is analogous of those who will love this society so much that they will long for it, and turn away from zeal for the Word of God.
19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
Abraham was at Shechem and looked out over nearly a hundred miles to see the smoke ascending into the heavens. So the destruction of all those who refuse to separate themselves from the wickedness of rejecting zeal to live by every Word of God will be seen by all.
19:27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: 19:28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
Here Moses informs us that even righteous Lot was resistant to separate himself from the wicked and was virtually dragged out and saved; because of Abraham!
19:29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
Lot apparently afraid that Zoar would also be destroyed went up to hide in the mountains instead of going into Zoar.
19:30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
Here Lot’s two daughters lacked faith and tried to do what they thought was right in their circumstances, instead of relying on the Word of God. Instead of discussing the matter with their father who would have inquired of God; they decided to use deception to attain their purpose; this an indication that they knew their father Lot would object.
We lack full information and the wisdom of God and so our own ways are foolish compared to God’s Word. When we blindly stand on our own traditions instead of on the Word of God, we are truly spiritually blind! just as blind and foolish as these sincere and well meaning young ladies.
19:31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
This illustrates the evils of drunkenness during which we can lose control of ourselves and become susceptible to things that we would regard as unthinkable when sober. The spiritual essence of the command to not be drunk, is that we are never to give control of a sound mind over to anyone or any substance.
This refers to being drunk with alcohol and drugs, and it also refers to being made drunk with sin and pride in ourselves and our group, so that we exalt them above the Word of God; as is done in the majority of the Ekklesia today.
Compromising with the whole Word of God and turning away from God to our own ways is fornication with false religion and false teachings. To fornicate is to become ONE with these things and to separate ourselves from God.
Revelation 17:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
Genesis 19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 19:34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 19:35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 19:37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 19:38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
The descendants of these two boys are the indigenous people of Jordan today. Jordanians are not the descendants of Ishmael and they are not Arabs; they are the family of Abraham through his nephew Lot.
Abraham travels around Canaan as God had instructed him.
Genesis 20:1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
Abraham then repeats the mistake that he made in Egypt and failed to trust in God. This must have been very soon after the promise of her pregnancy as Abimelech would have surely seen that if she was more advanced.
20:2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
God then warns Abimelech in a dream to save him from the sin of adultery. Yes, God does work in dreams and visions, and sometime with a still small voice.
Of course we must test what we receive by the whole Word of God as Peter did by the sea. Peter rightly rejected the idea that the dream was allowing the eating of unclean animals and God had to open Peter’s mind and reveal the real meaning, before Peter understood that God was really saying that all sincerely repentant men are acceptable to God, and that his dream was not about eating clean and unclean animals.
If a dream, vision or voice is not consistent with the whole Word of God it is to be rejected.
Please bear with me here as this will come out in a few verses.
Now Abimelech and his family were afflicted by God because of Sarah, and Abimelech had been seeking an answer as to why the plague had come upon them, at which point God comes to him in a dream in answer to his prayer.
20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife. 20:4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, LORD, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? 20:5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
20:6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. 20:7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
Abimelech was very afraid and demands an explanation from Abraham.
20:8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. 20:10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
Abraham responds by telling of his fears.
Brethren, there are times in our lives when we all face fears; that is the time to; RUN to our Mighty Fortress of Strength and to Trust in the promises and deliverance of our High Tower and Refuge: the God who parted the sea! Let us not lean to our own ways, which are like a rotten walking stick; which when we lean on it, it breaks under us causing us to fall.
20:11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake. 20:12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. 20:13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
God delivered Abimelech, Abraham and Sarah; while the plan of Abraham would have killed Abimelech, defiled Sarah, and confused the parentage of Isaac.
Trust in God and passionately keep his Word, and our Mighty Deliverer will save us; and if he chooses not to save physically in this life, we will be with him in our next conscious moment!
Abimelech then restores Sarah to Abraham and gives him great wealth, because of his fear of God; for surely Abraham deserved punishment and not gifts.
20:14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. 20:15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. 20:16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
Now it is revealed that God had sent some kind of disease on Abimelech and his family [seemingly involving reproduction] before appearing to him in a dream to reveal the reason for the plague.
20:17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. 20:18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.
God is ABLE to fulfill ALL his promises! If at any time he does not, it is because his promises are CONDITIONAL on our sincere repentance and passion for learning and keeping his Word! God’s promises are also subject to God’s own good timing, or to the timing that has been aforetime appointed such as the date of the coming of Messiah the Christ!
Genesis 21:1 And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. 21:2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
Isaac meaning “laughter” was a perpetual reminder to Abraham and Sarah of their lack of faith when the promise of Isaac was given. This name “Laughter” is also indicative of the great joy of Abraham and Sarah at the birth of a son in their old age.
21:3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. 21:4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.
And we are to likewise obey this command of God to circumcise our sons on the eighth day. This circumcision on the Eighth Day is a prophecy of the Eighth Day Feast; when ALL humanity will be circumcised in heart and will go forth sensitive and subject to the whole Word of God for all eternity.
21:5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
Sarah then exclaimed that she will now laugh for joy! and that others who hear of her joy will also smile and laugh for joy with her.
21:6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh [God has given joy for a son is born.] , so that all that hear will laugh with me. 21:7 And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.
Abraham made a feast of rejoicing for Isaac when he was about four years old; and Hagar again mocked Sarah because of her son Ishmael who was the first born.
21:8 And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. 21:9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
Sarah then demanded of Abraham that he should cast away the son of the bondwoman; the son of bondage should not be heir with the free born son of promise. This being an allegory of the Mosaic Covenant which brought no spiritual inheritance; for the Mosaic Covenant could not inherit spiritual things and its members will not inherit spiritual promises until they are called into a New Covenant (Jer 31, Hebrews)
21:10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
Galatians 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh [An allegory of the Mosaic Covenant which had no promise of spiritual inheritance] ; but he of the freewoman was by promise [An allegory of the promise of a spiritual inheritance in a New Covenant].
4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai [The Mosaic Covenant], which gendereth to bondage [Bondage to death as the penalty of sin, since the blood of animals only reconciled them to the Mosaic Covenant; and could not bring them into the spiritual New Covenant with its spiritual promises] , which is Agar. 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai [the physical Mosaic Covenant] in Arabia, and answereth to [physical earthly] Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free [The heavenly Jerusalem represents the spiritual New Covenant of Jer 31, and faithfulness to God in sincere repentance, having the sacrifice of Christ applied to us and committing to go and sin no more; which then reconciles us to God spiritually and frees the sincerely repentant from bondage to death which is the wages of sin] , which is the mother of us all.
Abraham loved his first born and was grieved to send Ishmael away; and Ishmael has been grieved at the supposed loss of his birthright as the first born son ever since. God then told Abraham that this was from him, for Isaac was the son of promise [representing the New Covenant of promise] and not Ishmael.
Genesis 21:11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son. 21:12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
God then gives Ishmael to be a nation because of Abraham his father.
21:13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
Then Abraham obeyed and sent Ishmael and Hagar away.
21:14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. 21:15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs [for shade].
The young man of about 17 cried for water dying of thirst, and Hagar could not bear it and went a little ways off to weep herself. Imagine yourself in these circumstances. These are real people suffering real distress. The Word of God is not some dry history; it is about real people and real lessons for life.
God saved Hagar and Ishmael to KEEP HIS PROMISE to Abraham; that Ishmael would become a great nation!
Almighty God keeps his promises! His faithful; trust and depend on HIM; and do not lean to their own ways!
21:16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. 21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
God then delivers Hagar and Ishmael.
21:18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. 21:19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
21:20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21:21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
The founding of Beer Sheba
Abimelech’s servants take a well that Abraham ‘s servants had dug in Abimelech’s territory; causing a dispute between Abraham and Abimelech. At that time the area belonged to the Philistines and Abraham had dug a well on Abimelech’s land.
Abraham makes a covenant with Abimelech to settle the dispute with him.
Abimelech knew about the God of all creation through the example of Abraham. He knew that Abraham’s God was the one who had healed his wife and maidservants so that they would bear him children. Abimelech knew that Abraham’s God was with him in all that he did.
When it came to a dispute over land and a well (in that part of the world a very important thing since it was a dry and arid plain), all Abimelech needed was for Abraham to swear by his God that he was telling the truth and did actually dig the well he claimed and that there would be peace between Abraham and Abimelech’s descendants from then on.
Payment for the land was made by Abraham, the oath solemnly symbolized by the gift of 7 ewe lambs, and that settled everything.
21:22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest: 21:23 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned. 21:24 And Abraham said, I will swear.
21:25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away. 21:26 And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.
See how these men resolved the problem instead of fighting. Abraham proved the well was his, and Abimelech proved he owned the land; so they agreed that Abraham would buy that land with cattle and sheep; and Beer Sheba became the property of Abraham and through him the property of Isaac.
21:27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant.
Abraham then sets seven Ewe’s as a seven fold oath that his servants had dug the well and that the well was his. When Abimelech accepted these seven ewe’s; he accepted that Abraham had indeed dug the well.
21:28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. 21:29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves? 21:30 And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well.
21:31Wherefore he called that place Beersheba [Beer-sheba = “well of the sevenfold oath”]; because there they sware both of them.
Abimelech then returned from the strife back to his royal city of the Philistines.
21:32 Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines. 21:33 And Abraham planted a grove [trees] in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God. 21:34 And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines’ land many days.
Knowing the mind of God, one could easily think that this event happened around Passover. In any case this is a profound allegory about the Passover and is one key to understanding the Passover.
God tests Abraham concerning Isaac.
When Abraham trusted God and did not withhold his only son, his beloved son of promise; God provided a lamb. Which test is an allegory of how God the Father, gave his only begotten son to die as the Lamb of God for the sins of the world.
Genesis 22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah [the threshing floor at the top of the temple mount; which had as yet no temple.]; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
God had promised Abraham that Isaac would be the father of many nations and millions of people; Abraham believed the promise of God and yet was ready to give his son of promise, believing that God would somehow still find a way to keep his promise to him. After many years and much developing of faith and learning on the way, Abraham was ready for the final test which would make him the spiritual father of all those faithful to God. This is the kind of total dedication to obeying the whole word of God; that is expected of every faithful called out pillar of God!
Abraham was willing to give his beloved son of promise; the most precious thing he possessed; because he believed, trusted and obeyed God! And most of us will not give up a visit to a restaurant on the Sabbath to obey and please God! Oh, how far we have fallen from the faith and loving obedience of Abraham!
Moses takes two servants and Isaac with him and begins his journey to the Mount. The journey must have been filled with confusion of mind as Abraham struggled with the apparent contradiction between the promise and the command; and filled with tears over what he was commanded to do.
The poor man must have been in agony of spirit, because he had already lost his beloved Ishmael and now Isaac was apparently being taken to please God; yet he trusted God and obeyed his Word! Think about this when you are tried in your own life; be faithful to the whole Word of God, and he will make a way for you.
22:3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
On the third day Abraham left his servants and went to the Mount with Isaac.
22:4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 22:5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 22:6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Abraham said to Isaac: “God will provide a lamb my son”; this being in prophecy, that God the Father would provide HIS son, as the Lamb of God to be sacrificed for the sins of all mankind.
22:7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Abraham obeyed God and Isaac also obeyed God, permitting himself to be bound and laid upon the wood. This was an analogy that God the Father would not withhold his ONLY begotten son and would sacrifice him for OUR sins; and that his son Jesus Christ would allow himself as the Creator of humanity, to be sacrificed to save mankind!
Brethren, God has given us such a gift; how can we not be zealous to follow Abraham’s example of obedience and be passionately zealous to learn and to live by every Word of God?
22:9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
As Abraham was about to obey God and kill his son of promise to please God; the LORD called out to him and stayed his hand.
22:10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 22:11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
Abraham did not withhold even his beloved son of promise, and the overwhelming majority of today’s Ekklesia will not even refrain from doing their own thing on Sabbath and polluting it. Consider the comparison of zeal for God and the lack of love and zeal for God in the Ekklesia today. No wonder we make Jesus Christ SICK to his stomach, so that he will vomit out those lukewarm for his Word; expelling them out of his body and out of his mouth (Rev 3:16).
For the faithful and passionately zealous to learn, and to teach and to live by every Word of God: God has provided his Lamb, Jesus Christ; and will apply that sacrifice to all who come to him in sincere repentance, committing to go and SIN NO MORE!
22:13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
Jehovahjireh: “The Eternal has provided”.
22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day [the day that Moses wrote this], In the mount of the LORD [Jebus, Jerusalem] it shall be seen.
After the sacrifice of the ram God again calls out to Abraham from heaven.
22:15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
Abraham is blessed for his faithful obedience to the whole word of God, even to giving up his most precious and beloved possession, and we cannot even give up our false traditions, in which we take so much pleasure! For shame!
22:16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
22:19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
Then Abraham heard that his brother Nahor who had remained at Haran had also had children and an extended family. This news causes Abraham to send his servant there to seek a wife for Isaac out of his cousins in Haran.
22:20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor; 22:21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, 22:22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. 22:23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 22:24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
The death of Sarah.
Genesis 23:1 And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah. 23:2 And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
Abraham buys Machpelah.
23:3 And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying, 23:4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. 23:5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him, 23:6 Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.
Abraham humbles himself before the people of the land and asks only to buy a burying place in Hebron.
23:7 And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. 23:8 And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, 23:9 That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
Because Abraham was known to be a just and honorable man, and his example was righteous in the Word of God before all his neighbours; God had caused even the unconverted to respect him.
23:10 And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, 23:11 Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead.
Abraham insists on paying for the land.
23:12 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land. 23:13 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there. 23:14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, 23:15 My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead. 23:16 And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
So Abraham bought the field in Hebron as a burying place for his family, and to this day the cave of Machpelah is venerated as the tomb of the family of Abraham.
23:17 And the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure 23:18 Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
23:19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. 23:20 And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.
A Bride for Isaac
This chapter is about the faithfulness and power of God to keep his promises to his faithful; and the faithfulness of God’s true people to keep God’s Word and trust in him. Abraham trusts God and acts on that trust, as does his servant, and as does Isaac, who waits on God and does not take a wife from the Canaanites [typical of the called out, marrying unconverted spouses and becoming one with the leaven of unrighteousness. As we have seen this sin was a prime cause of the flood of Noah.].
There is also great faith on the party of Rebecca who is willing to leave her home and travel a great distance to take a husband she has not seen and does not know, based on the miracle of God given to Abraham’s servant.
Genesis 24:1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
Abraham bound his servant with an oath against his descendants if he failed to provide a wife for Isaac out of his brother Nahor’s family.
It was and is, in many cultures even today, common to seal an agreement by grasping a man’s genitals while uttering the words. This was not sexual, but a kind of committing one’s self by his potential descendants to keep his word.
In western terms this was swearing something by ones descendants. This was especially appropriate for Abraham to require of his servant, as the mission was to find a wife to produce descendants for Abraham.
24:2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
Abraham and his descendants are to be types of the spiritually called out, while the Canaanites were to be type of sin; For a faithful person to knowingly marry the unconverted person, is to bind good and evil together as ONE flesh; and is a physical type of spiritually becoming one with sin.
We are not to tolerate any sin among our assemblies, or within ourselves personally!
1 Corinthians 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. 5:2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
5:3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Let us live our lives free from the leaven of sin; and let us reject the willfully sinful person from our assemblies.
5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Genesis 24:3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 24:4 But thou shalt go unto my country [Haran in Syria], and to my kindred [The family of Abraham’s brother Nahor], and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
The servant then asks a relevant question, to which Abraham replies that Isaac must NOT return to Syria for God has commanded then to dwell in Canaan.
24:5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 24:6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
Abraham encourages his servant that God will provide a wife for Isaac. Again Abraham trusts and relies on the promises of God that Isaac would be the father of millions!
24:7 The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 24:8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
The servant then swore by all his descendants while grasping the genitals of Abraham; that he would obey all the words of Abraham.
24:9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.
This servant was given whatever he required for his journey, and left for Haran of Syria the city of Nahor. The word “Mesopotamia” might confuse some people into thinking that this servant was going to UR; but “Mesopotamia” means the land between the rivers and goes right up through Syria and into modern Turkey. And we know that Nahor now lived in Haran.
24:10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.
At the approach to Haran the city of Nahor Abraham’s servant rested his camels and sought water. He asked God to give him directions that he might quickly find the house of Nahor.
24:11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
Abraham’s servant did not dare to make his own choice but asks for a sign directly from God identifying God’s choice for Isaac. We see in this that Abraham had taught his servants to trust in God like he did. This woman was not courted by Isaac, but came from a far country and was chosen for him directly by God.
24:12 And he said O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. 24:13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 24:14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
And immediately Rebecca appeared and fulfilled the requested sign, being the daughter of Bethuel and granddaughter of Nahor the brother of Abraham.
24:15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 24:16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
24:17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 24:18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 24:19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 24:20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
24:21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit [to see if she was the one] whetherthe LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
Abraham’s servant then asked the maid about her family, and when he had found that she was of Abraham’s brother Nahor’s family and that she was hospitable, he thanked God for he knew that she was God’s choice for Isaac.
24:22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;
Abraham’s servant nearly convinced but taking great care, gives her gold bracelets for drawing the water and asks her about a lodging place to test her further. Rebecca offers him the hospitality of her father’s house without Abraham’s servant even identifying himself or his mission.
24:23 And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in? 24:24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 24:25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
Abraham’s servant being a man of faith, then thanked God for his mercies in aiding his mission.
24:26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 24:27 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
24:28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things.
24:29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban [the same Laban who Jacob ran to.] : and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 24:30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
Laban prepared a place for Abraham’s servant straight away upon hearing from Rebecca; not yet knowing the servants mission.
24:31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
24:32 And the man came into the house: and he [Laban] ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the
camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him. 24:33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he [Abraham’s servant] said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on.
Abraham relates the story of his mission.
24:34 And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. 24:35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 24:36 And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 24:37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 24:38 But thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.
24:39 And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 24:40 And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house: 24:41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.
24:42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: 24:43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; 24:44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son.
24:45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. 24:46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.
24:47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 24:48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.
Abraham’s servant is so excited he asks for an immediate answer even before eating!
24:49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Bethuel the father of Laban and Rebecca, and Laban himself; accept the Word of God.
24:50 Then Laban and Laban’s father] Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 24:51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken.
The servant of Abraham then thanked God and gave gifts to Rebecca and her family as the custom was.
24:52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 24:53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
They feasted through the night rejoicing together and then Abraham’s servant was urgent to leave and return with Isaac’s wife. Then Laban wanted them to delay for ten days, but the servant refused because he was on a mission for Abraham and for God to bring to Isaac the mother of many nations.
24:54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 24:55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. 24:56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
They then asked the maid, and she was willing to go quickly.
24:57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 24:58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 24:59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men.
The blessing of Rebekah was according to the blessings of God upon Abraham and Isaac.
24:60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
24:61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels [maids and servants, her family being well off also] , and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
24:62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country. 24:63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 24:64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.
Immediately upon seeing Isaac she was no longer a single woman, and covered her head with a veil as being the married wife of Isaac.
24:65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.
24:66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
24:67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
Keturah means means perfumed or incense (SH 6989), The word qetorah (SH 6988, from 6989), found only in Deuteronomy 33:10, also means smoke of sacrifice or incense. The Arabic name for Keturah is Saffurah, who was described as a Kushiyat (i.e. a Cushite, a Canaanite]
The children of Keturah.
Genesis 25:1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
25:2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan and Midian [Midian was and is the Bedouins, from which the father in law of Moses came.], and Ishbak, and Shuah [Also called Shuach, this sixth and last of Keturah’s sons has a name meaning variously wealth (BDB) or dell, sink, incline (Strong: SHD 7744). He was the progenitor of the Shuhites, the most notable of whom was Bildad, son of Shuach, and one of Job’s ‘comforters’ (Job 2:11). This dates Job as about the time of the grandson of Abraham.
Matthew Poole makes some interesting comments on this verse in Job. Shuah’s descendants were also well known to the Assyrians, who referred to them as Suhu, and described their land as being on the right bank of the Euphrates River, south of Carchemish and between the Balikh and Khabur rivers (cf. Dillmann, Holzinger, et al). Ptolemy calls the latter Chaboras, which is probably one of the two Chebar rivers referred to by Ezekiel (Ezek. 1:1ff.). The name Shuhite is Sauchaioon in Greek.]
The second son of Keturah by Abraham, Jokshan, had two sons Sheba and Dedan. Dedan is recorded as being the progenitor of the Asshurim, the Letushim and the Leummim (Gen. 25:3) the three Baltic Lettish nations of today.
Confusion can arise with several of these names. For instance: although the term Asshurim here is related to Asshur (SHD 804), it refers to a completely different people from the Assyrians (also 804), who were descendants of Asshur son of Shem. Similarly, Sheba was the name given generations earlier to one of thirteen sons of Joktan, son of Eber (from whom the Hebrews are named).
25:3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim , and Letushim, [The Lettish people; modern Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Letushim (SHD 3912) means hammered or oppressed (Strong’s), directly related to a word (3913) meaning to sharpen, hammer, whet (BDB),] and Leummim [(SHD 3817) means peoples or communities, from a root word meaning to gather.
25:4 And the sons of Midian; [Not the Medes, but the Midianites; the Bedouin] ]Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. (Also 1 Ch 1:33).
Abraham sent these sons to the east with many gifts, but the inheritance was to Isaac.
25:5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac. 25:6 But unto the sons of [of Keturah and the concubines who are not named] the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
They were sent away because God had promised that land to Isaac.
Abraham dies at 175 years old.
25:7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. 25:8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
Abraham was buried by his first two sons with his beloved Sarah.
25:9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; 25:10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
25:11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi [The well where the Lord met with Hagar ( Genesis 16:7-14 )].
The Family of Ishmael
Ishmael fathered twelve princes.
25:12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bare unto Abraham: 25:13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, 25:14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, 25:15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: 25:16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.
Ishmael died at 137 years old, and his sons dwelt in Arabia.
25:17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. 25:18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.
The family of Isaac
25:19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac: 25:20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the [granddaughter of Nahor the brother of Abraham] daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
Rebecca was barren and God gave her twins in answer to the prayers of Isaac.
These twins from God were to be an allegory of those who sought the birthright and blessings of God with enthusiastic zeal; and those who were lukewarm, uncaring and who think little of God’s promises; instead exalting their own ways and wants above the Word of God.
25:21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
God reveals to Rebecca what is taking place within her. Remember that this pregnancy was from God and this is a God given allegory about the difference between the lukewarm [Laodicea] and the zealous.
25:22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD. 25:23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger [as a type of strength through love and zeal for God] than the other people [Who are a type of the spiritually called out, being strong for their own ways, instead of being zealous for the blessings and birthright of their calling]; and the elder shall serve the younger.
25:24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25:25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
Isaac was 60 when his first children were born to the barren Rebecca.
This was a miracle from God to teach us to seek to have a deep, deep, desire for the birthright and blessings of our calling to God, to hold our calling as the most precious thing in all our lives, so that we are exuberantly passionate to learn and live by every Word of God and overcome to receive the birthright of our calling which is eternal life!
Esau was rightfully the first born and had the right and the blessings of the first born, but he held this is small esteem, so that he was willing to give them up for relief from any small adversity.
But Jacob reached out for, sought for and fought for the birthright and the blessings physically; this is a spiritual lesson that only those who are HOT for, who value and who delight in the birthright of their calling to become like God the Father; only those who work day and night to internalize the whole Word of God; and with passion learn it, to keep it and to internalize it: shall receive the blessings and the promised birthright of our spiritual calling: Which is the spiritual Promised Land of eternal life!
Yes, Jacob took Esau’s birthright and his blessing by subterfuge and deceit; and that was wrong! Yet if Esau had valued his birthright and blessings he would have been zealous to protect them always and could not have been tricked into giving them up
The deceit of Jacob is the subplot, the main plot is that we are to VALUE and hold PRECIOUS our spiritual calling and birthright as the Son’s of God the Father; we are to be faithful and full of love and passion to live by every Word of God and to internalize the very nature of God; that we might attain to the birthright of our calling and enter the Promised Land of eternal life!
25:26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
25:27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. 25:28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Esau undervalues his birthright and sells it for a pot of soup to ease his hunger. He could have taken something from the family kitchen, but he wanted that soup and would give anything for it. That is like most brethren today; they want their own way, and do not value the birthright of their calling, and are not faithful to the Word of God that they were called to.
25:29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: 25:30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
25:31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
25:32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? 25:33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
Will you despise the birthright of your calling by polluting the Sabbath or idolizing the contrary to scripture Rabbinic Calendar? Will you despise the birthright of your calling to turn and blindly obey without question, some mere mortal man; contrary to the whole Word of God? Then like Esau lost his physical birthright because he did not value it; you will lose the birthright of your spiritual calling!
Isaac goes to the friend of his father Abraham, Abimelech the king of the Philistines. Since Abraham had died by this time and Abimelech would be very old, or is this man the son of Abimelech with the same name?
Genesis 26:1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
The God being who became Jesus Christ, instructed Isaac to remain in Gerar and not to go into Egypt, and Isaac obeyed God.
26:2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. 26:6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
Then Isaac made the same mistake that his father Abraham had made. No doubt Abraham or Isaac’s mother must have told him of these things, yet Isaac also made the same mistake, possibly with the same king or his son.
26:7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
Nevertheless Abimelech and the people of Gerar left Rebecca alone; until one day Abimelech saw Isaac and Rebecca in a compromising act.
26:8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
Abimelech then confronts Isaac because of the danger Isaac had brought to his people, that some man might have fancied Rebecca.
26:9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. 26:10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
Abimelech then warned all his off people from Rebecca.
26:11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
God blessed Isaac mightily with a hundredfold increase that year.
26:12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him. 26:13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
The Philistines began to envy and to fear Isaac; and so some began to fill in his wells which were dug by Isaac’s father Abraham.
26:14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him. 26:15 For all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
Then because strife was rising, Abimelech asked Isaac to leave them.
26:16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we. 26:17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
Isaac left Gerar and its immediate outskirts going out into the countryside where he opened the wells of his father Abraham in the land of the kingdom of Gerar, and the inhabitants of the land strove with his servants.
26:18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 26:19 And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. 26:20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
Isaac did not fight but then moved on a bit and opened up another well of his father Abraham from which he retreated from the same strife.
26:21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
Again Isaac moved further away and opened another well of his father Abraham and this time peace prevailed.
26:22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
God calls Isaac in a dream in Beer-Sheba and pronounces him directly to his face, heir to the promises he gave Abraham.
26:23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
26:24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 26:25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.
Isaac makes a peace treaty with Abimelech.
This example of Abraham and Isaac puts those who strive with one another and go to court with lawsuits to shame.
26:26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. 26:27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 26:28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; 26:29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
26:30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink. 26:31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
That day Isaac’s diggers found water while digging out the well of Abraham at Beer Sheba.
26:32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well [of Abraham] which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water. 26:33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
Beer Sheva; well of the oath, or well of seven [Ewe’s], a well dug by Abraham, and so named because he and Abimelech here entered into a compact (Gen. 21:31), long before Isaac came there to dig out the wells of his father Abraham.
Isaac’s son Esau took him wives of the Canaanites; Judith and Bashemath, which grieved Isaac and Rebecca, his parents.
But the birthright and the blessings were to be Jacob’s as God had promised Rebecca when she was pregnant.
26:34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: 26:35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
