Chronology: From Creation to the Exodus

The Biblical Chronology From Creation to the Exodus

Adam became the father of Seth at 130. (Genesis 5:3)  0 + 130 = 130

Seth became the father of Enosh at 105. (Genesis 5:6)   130 + 105 = 235

Enosh became the father of Kenan at 90. (Genesis 5:9)   235 + 90 = 325

Cainan became the father of Mahalalel at 70. (Genesis 5)  12 325 + 70 = 395

Mahalalel became the father of Jared at 65. (Genesis 5:15)   395 + 65 = 460

Jared became the father of Enoch at 162. (Genesis 5:18)   460 + 162 = 622

Enoch became the father of Methuselah at 65. (Genesis 5:21)   622 + 65 = 687

Methuselah became the father of Lamech at 187. (Genesis 5:25)   687 + 187 = 874

Lamech became the father of Noah at 182. (Genesis 5:28)   874 + 182 = 1056

The Flood started when Noah was 600. (Genesis 7:6)   1056 + 600 = 1656

From creation to the beginning of the flood:  1656 A.M. 2294 B.C.

From the Flood to the Exodus

Shem was born 97 years (1559 A.M.  2391 B.C.) before the flood when Noah was 503 years old; since Shem’s son Arphaxad was born when Shem was one hundred years old, two years after the flood and the flood itself took a full year.

Genesis 11:10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood: Arphaxad was born three years after the flood began  1656 +3 = 1659 A.M.  (2291 B.C.)

11:12 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah  1659 + 35 = 1694

11:14 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:   1694 + 30 = 1724

Genesis 11:16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:

1724 + 34 = 1758

Genesis 11:18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu  1758 + 30 = 1788

11:20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:  1788 + 32 = 1820

11:22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:  1820 + 30 = 1850

11:24 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:  1850 + 29 = 1879

The birth date of Abram

11:26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Terah’s total age was 205 years, and to the casual reader of Genesis 11:26, Abram was born when Terah was 70 years of age, but in this case Abram was apparently placed first because of his spiritual legacy while the others may have been born before him.

The specific birth year of Abram can be found in Genesis 12:4 where Abram’s age is recorded as being 75 years when his father Terah died at the age of 205 and Abram departed out of Haran. By simply subtracting 75 from 2005 we can date the birth of Abram in the 130th year of Terah.

Genesis 12:4  So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

Genesis 11:31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. 11:32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

293 years from Terah’s birth up to Terah’s 70th year, plus another 60 years to the birth of Abram in Terah’s 130  year equals 353 years:  The birth of Abram being in the 130th year of Terah.

Abram was born: Total 353 + 1656 = 2009 A.M.  (1941 B.C.)

21:5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

Abraham was 100 when Isaac was born in 2109 A.M.  (1842 B.C.)

25:26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

Isaac was sixty when Jacob was born in 2169 A.M.  (1782 B.C.)

47:28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.

a lifespan of 147 years minus 17 years in Egypt, means that Jacob was 130 years old when he went into Egypt.

2169 A.M. + 130 = 2299 A.M.  (1651 B.C.)  since the creation of Adam, when Jacob went down to Egypt with all his family.

 Exodus Prophecies

The 400 Years Prophecy

The belief that the children of Israel were slaves in Egypt for 400 years is largely based upon these two verses.

“And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years …” (Genesis 15:13). “And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years” (Acts 7:6).

Here is the meaning; thy seed refers to the children of Abraham beginning with Isaac the son of promise, who would be wonderers having no land of their own for four hundred years beginning with the birth of Isaac.

Isaac was born when Abraham was one hundred years old; therefore the exodus and the Sinai Covenant would take place four hundred years after the birth of Isaac or five hundred years after the birth of Abraham!

Abraham was born in 2009 A.M. (1941 B.C.):  therefore the Exodus was 500 years later in 2509 A.M. (1441 B.C.) with a margin of possible error of a few years.

 The 430 Years Prophecy

The 430 years contains an additional thirty years added to the four hundred years and refers to 430 years after the PROMISE was made to Abraham in Ur when he was 70 years old; thirty years BEFORE the birth of Isaac!

“Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt” (Exodus 12:40-41).

Here the word “sojourning” gives an impression that they sojourned or lived in Egypt for 430 years; when in fact the word sojourning refers to the wonderings of Abram and his descendants from the time of God’s promise to Abraham in Ur of the Chaldees,  which calling and promise caused Abram to leave his home city and become a wonderer [through faith in the promise] until they became the covenant nation at Sinai.

The idea of a promise has become confused with a covenant and this has obscured the point that this refers to God’s PROMISE to Abraham in Ur, and not the Genesis 15 covenant made in Canaan; God’s PROMISE being made 430 years before Sinai!.

Shaul (Paul) a highly respected scholar of the Pharisees who is speaking concerning  a dating on which there was absolutely no controversy in his day; wrote of the PROMISE of God [not a covenant] being made 430 years BEFORE the Sinai Covenant.

The Covenant made by God with Abraham in the land in Genesis 15, was only a repeating of the previous PROMISE; since Genesis 15 was only a few years before the birth of Isaac, and the PROMISE spoken of was made in Ur [and the wonderings based on faith in the promise began] 30 years BEFORE the birth of Isaac.

This does not mean that the children of Israel dwelt in Egypt 430 years.

Paul explains that the 430 years extends from the time of God’s PROMISE to Abraham until the children of Israel left Egypt. “And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before [at Sinai] of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after [after the PROMISE], cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect (Galatians 3:17).

That is, the Sinai Covenant cannot disannul the PROMISE made to Abraham 430 years earlier.

God called Abram in Ur at the age of 70, promising him that if he left to follow God to a new land he would be greatly blessed.  They travelled to Haran where Terah died being 205 years old and Abram was 75 years old; after which Abram continued the journey to Canaan at the age of 75.

The promise in Ur which caused Abram to leave his home and wonder in faith in the promise of God; is the ONLY event which fits the timeline of the 430 years [of wondering in hope of that promise], beginning when Abraham was 70 years old, referred to by Paul.

The 430 years of Exodus 12:40-41 is a reference to Israel inheriting the promise and becoming a nation at Sinai 430 years AFTER the PROMISE was made to Abram to make of him a great nation!

The 400 years prophecy was that from the birth of Isaac it would be 400 years to the exodus and the covenant at Sinai.

The descendents of Abram exited Egypt as a great nation exactly 400 years after the birth of Isaac and exactly 500 years after the birth of Abram in the 130th year of Terah: Precisely 430 years after the promise was given to Abraham in Ur to make of him a great nation if he would faithfully follow and obey God.

We see the keeping of God’s promise fulfilled 430 years after it was given; and we see the fulfillment of the prophecy that from the birth of Isaac, four hundred years later Israel would be delivered and become a great nation also being fulfilled.

The Fourth Generation Prophecy

Genesis 15:14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 And thou [Abraham] shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

16 But in the fourth generation they [the descendents of Abraham through Isaac and Jacob] shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

Levi was one of Jacob’s 12 sons and went down to Egypt with Jacob. We see from Genesis 46:8-11 that Kohath, the son of Levi and grandfather of Moses, was already born when Jacob and his family entered Egypt. Kohath lived to be 133, and his son Amram lived to be 137 (Exodus 6:18-20).

Born 80 years before the exodus from Egypt, Moses was the son of Amram, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi (1 Chronicles 6:1-3).

Moses was thus the fourth generation of those who had entered Egypt:

  1. Levi;
  2. Kohath;
  3. Amram;
  4. Moses.
