The Doctrine of the Soul

Many believe that man has an immortal soul which after the physical death goes to a place of judgment where a decision is made by God to cast this immortal soul into eternal torment or into eternal bliss.

Others teach that the word “soul” simply means a physical body and then contradict that teaching by admitting that there is a spirit in man.  They take the word “soul ” [nafesh] in Genesis out of its context, separating it from the contextual word “living” to insist that the word means only a physical body

Genesis 2:7  And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

What is the truth?

They are BOTH wrong!

It is wrong to teach that the word “soul” means an immortal soul, and it is equally wrong to teach that the word “soul” is limited in meaning to a mere physical body; when the word actually means: The Life in a Living Body.

That is, the word “soul” means the breath of life, or the spirit of man and of animals.  [Psuche] meaning spirit.  See Strong’s G 5590  The “soul” is really the spirit of life in a living body; whether man or animal.

Does this mean that the soul is immortal?  Absolutely not!

Ezekiel 18:4  Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
We see from Jesus’ words that men are not able to kill the spirit in man; but that God is able to kill and destroy the spirit in man.
Matthew 10:28  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Yes, the word “soul” does mean, the spirit of man in man; and the life or spirit of animals in animals.  No, the word “soul” does not mean an immortal or eternal being.

There is a huge difference between the spirit in man and the spirit of God!

God is immortal but the spirit in man is NOT immortal, until God changes the spirit of man into an eternal spirit; by marrying the spirit in man to the spirit of the eternal God!

There is a spirit in breathing animals and a better spirit in man; and then there is a far far better spirit of God.

The spirit in animals is only basic, somewhat like the operating system of a computer in terms of function.  It allows the physical animal to function but does not grant the animal more than extremely limited abilities.

The spirit in man is much more advanced than the spirit in animals, allowing much greater functional cognitive abilities and recording everything  a person does and learns.  The spirit of man is like a recording which when removed from the recorder cannot function until it is placed into another machine [body].

God has the power to destroy the recording [spirit of man] or to place that recording into a new body, either physical or made completely of spirit.  Therefore the spirit in man, the “human soul,” is not immortal at all, but subject to the will of God as to whether God will place that spirit [soul] in a new physical body, destroy that spirit [soul];  or grant eternal life and place it in a body made of spirit.

Yes, the word soul does mean “the spirit in man”:  No, that soul [spirit in man] is NOT immortal.

1 Corinthians 2:11  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

Where are the souls of the dead kept after the death of the physical body?

There are two types of the physical dead:

1  Those who died in sin,  and

2   Those who died in faith and zealous godliness, whom God has chosen for the change to eternal spirit.

God has not chosen to reveal to us where the souls [spirits of men] who died outside of salvation are kept until they are placed back into new physical bodies in a resurrection back to flesh.  When one dies in sin, his soul [spirit] is stored by God in God’s storehouse until the time comes for those who have died in sin to be restored to a new physical body and receive their chance for salvation.

God has however revealed where the souls [spirits of men] who have died in the works of faith and are among the Chosen for eternal life through a change to a spirit body are kept.  These Chosen souls [spirits] of the faithful dead, are stored in the altar before the throne of God the Father until their time comes to be placed in a new and eternal spirit body.

I did not write this, it is Holy Scripture!

Rev 6:9  And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar [Context: In heaven] the souls [spirits] of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Did you catch that?  The spirits of the godly are waiting stored in heaven, under the altar before the throne of God the Father!

They are not animate, not having bodies of either flesh or a spirit body, at this time; yet they are figuratively crying out for deliverance, to be given their reward of eternal spiritual bodies, and for the bloodshed of the called out on the earth to stop.

10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

The white raiment of righteousness is appointed for them, and they are told that in a very short time they will receive their spirit bodies and the  wickedness on the earth will be stopped.

Rev 6:11   And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest [remain dead] yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Daniel 12 reveals that 1,335 days after the miracle working abomination is set up in the Vatican; the chosen will receive their inheritance of a spirit body and eternal life, as well as becoming the bride [helpers] of Christ as Kings and Priests!

Dan 12:12   Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.  13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest [die], and stand in thy lot  [The inheritance of a spirit body and eternal life, along with a priestly and kingly position on the earth, together will all of the Chosen] at the end of the days.

If the spirits of the Godly dead are stored in heaven, why the opening of the graves on the earth?

The context must be understood.  God’s two servants have been preaching the true Gospel for 3 1/2 years and in that time have attracted the attention of the whole world.  Then they are killed and lie dead for 3 1/2 days before the whole world.

Without doubt these two have spoken to the world about the power of God to raise the dead who are faithful to God.  The whole mass of humanity has heard their preaching and is now waiting to see if the resurrection will really happen!  Through them and the miracles and doctrine God has provided to them; God has the attention of the whole of humanity.

Billions are watching:  Will these two come back to life and stand on their feet to rise up into heaven, or have they lied and is the Miracle worker from the Vatican the true man of God after all.

Then Christ comes with his angels and raises these two up, and also changes those in Christ who are alive, there will be massive earthquakes worldwide and Christ will bring the spirits of the dead in Christ the Chosen with him to change them in the sight of all the nations.

The event will be astonishing and Israel will repent and seek Christ and his deliverance with all their hearts.  Israel will remember the preaching of God’s two which they had laughed at; and will be dumbstruck at the resurrection or change, of probably millions.  they will see the power of God to deliver them from their existential distress and will cry out to Christ to deliver them.  The account is in Revelation 11 and in Rev 11:13 we see the result of these things for those that were in Jerusalem [the false prophet and beast]: and in Israel across the world!

Rev 11:13   . . . .and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

After the change of the bride to spirit she is taken to heaven where the wedding Feast before the Father takes place Rev 15, and the Chosen will then be consecrated as priests of the High Priesthood of Jesus Christ forever! Then to return to the earth to destroy the enemy gathered at Jerusalem and to deliver all flesh from Satan and Satan’s servants! After which they shall bring in the harvest of all humanity then living and though the millennium; before the final main harvest of the Feast of Tabernacles period.    Please see:  An Overview of the Biblical Holy Days and Appointed Times
